Slieve Donard

On Saturday afternoon, four Larne Athletic Club runners took part in the annual Slieve Donard race, the 5th race of the Hill and Dale Series and part of this year’s Irish Mountain Running Championships. Starting in Newcastle town centre, the 200 runners ran to the top of Slieve Donard and back, a distance of approximately 5.5 miles depending on the route chosen, but with 2796 feet of climbing either way.

Dale Smith was first finished for Larne AC in 46th place having climbed the direct route via the Black Stairs and descended steadily for a time of 1:14:13. Andy Gregg chose to follow the Glen River up to the Saddle to make use of the much faster running conditions, but lost ground on the descent to finish 69th in 1:18:00. Bryan Magee was nursing an injury from the Slievemartin Race and ran safely to finish 138th in a time of 1:31:42. Laura Smith climbed strongly to reach the summit in under an hour and descended well to finish 156th in a time of 1:36:42.
