Mountain Race Round-up
Larne Athletic Club runners have been in action in several mountain races over recent weeks.
On Thursday evening, Andy Gregg took part in the fifth round of the increasingly popular Hill and Dale Series, finishing 35th at Rocky. The four-mile race started at the very scenic location of Leitrim Lodge and included the summits of Altataggart, Pearse’s Castle and Tournamrock before the final climb and the fast descent of Rocky Mountain. Andy’s time was 40:15.
On the previous Thursday, Andy Gregg and Bryan Magee took part in the Slieve Binnian Race. This demanding course finishes at the summit of the mountain with the gradual start to the quarry giving way to a very steep climb – a total of 1800 feet in just under 2 miles. Andy finished 44th in 29:04 while Brian finished 56th in 29:41.
Bryan Magee took part in the Slievemartin Race, over a 4.5 mile route with some 1750 feet of climbing, including a steep climb past the Cloghmore Stone and up to the summits of Slievemeen and Slievemartin before a fast descent on rocky paths to the finish. Bryan finished 71st with a time of 44:42.
The Fallows mountain race took place on a ten-mile course starting at Kilbroney Forest Park in Rostrevor, incorporating almost 2600 feet of climbing over a variety of terrain including forest tracks, gravel paths, mountain trails and grassy bog. Andy Gregg finished 34th in 1:38:04.
