East Antrim Inter Club Race 2017

Larne Athletic Club hosted the East Antrim Inter club race on Tuesday 29th August, the event proving to be a huge success with a record entry of 272 runners. This year, the annual invitation race attracted athletes from Ballymena Runners, County Antrim Harriers, East Antrim Harriers, East Coast AC, Glens Runners, Monkstown Spartans, Mallusk Harriers, Whitehead runners and Seapark AC.

Summer rain accompanied the runners as they set off on an out-and-back course, descending from Linford carpark along the Feystown Road, with the men completing a 5–mile route and the ladies, 4 miles. The first half of the course is downhill and those familiar with the route will have known what to expect, with a tough climb of almost two miles on tiring legs to the encouragement of cheering supporters at the finish.

James Hamilton of Ballymena Runners crossed the line first to win in a time of 27:22. Matty Hewitt of East Coast AC was second in a time of 27:49, Ben Morrow was 3rd with time 28:08

In the team event which counts each clubs first six runners; Ballymena Runners won by 38 points. James Hamilton (1st), Ben Morrow (3rd), David Law (6th), Jason Wilson (7th), Michael Bennett (9th) and Richard Agnew (12th), Second in the team event was East Antrim Harriers on 89 points Tom Magee (5th), David Turtle (8th), Steven Beggs (11th), Chris Collins (17th), Michael Allen (22nd ) and James Kitchin (26th ). Third team was East Coast AC on 111 points Matty Hewitt (2nd), Justin Maxwell (4th), Aaron Callaghan (19th), Andy Guy (20th), James Robinson (31st) and Kevin Lynch (33rd).

The ladies race was won by Paula Worthington of Ballymena Runners in a great time of 25:26. Next in second place was Gillian Wasson of Ballymena Runners with 26:01. Geraldine Quigley made it a clean sweep for Ballymena in 3rd place with a time of 27:27

In the team event which counts each clubs first four runners; Ballymena Runners won by 12 points. Paula Worthington (1st), Gillian Wasson (2nd), Geraldine Quigley (3th) and Judith Brown (6th), Second in the team event was Glens Runners on 55 points Catherine McLaughlin (4th), Catrona Kerr (5th), Lucy O’Dell (15th) and Joanna Wheeler Connon (31st), Third team was Larne AC on 61 points Emma Mckeen (7th ), Beverley Gaston (49h), Lorraine Wharry (22nd) and Roberta Barham (23rd).

Larne Athletic Club would like to thank all Larne Athletic Club members who worked to ensure that the event ran smoothly, providing assistance with entries, timekeeping, results, marshalling on the course and for organising prizes and catering.
