On Saturday 30th September, several Larne Athletic Club runners travelled to the Mourne Mountains to take part in the final race of this year’s NIMRA mountain running Championship, the 7-mile Commedagh Chase. Sixty runners started along the Trassey Track following the well-trodden path to Hare’s Gap, turning left up Slievenaglogh and taking the ridge across Slieve Correy before climbing to the tower on the top of Slieve Commedagh. The runners then turned for a race down the slippery slope of Commedagh and took a more direct route downhill to the finish having completed some 2100 feet of climbing.
John Neill ran very well in his first race in the Mournes, finishing well up the field in 15th place with a time of 1:15:04. Andy Gregg finished in 20th place with a time of 1:19:55, almost four minutes faster than his previous best over the course. Dom Dorris was also competing in his first NIMRA race, and ran well to finish 44th in a time of 1:39:45. Steven Gilliland unfortunately had to pull out of the race in the early stages. Thanks also to Bryan Magee and Bert Shaw for the encouragement on the course.
