Mountain Running Update

Larne Athletic Club runners have continued to represent the club in the local mountain races in recent weeks, most of which have been attracting record numbers.
At Rostrevor in the Hill and Dale Series, Andy Gregg finished 55th, completing the 1740ft climb to the top of Slievemartin and back in a time of 44:14. Bryan Magee returned to action at Slieve Binnian, finishing 86th in very misty conditions in what is the only uphill finish of the Hill and Dale Series. Bryan completed the 2-miles, 2000ft climb in a time of 32:44.
Andy took part in the Annalong Horseshoe race, the third round of this year’s NIMRA Championship. Taking in a 13-mile long route with 5200 ft of climbing (about 1 vertical mile) over Chimney Rock, Slieve Commedagh, Slieve Beg, Cove, Slievelamagan and Slieve Binnian the race is a test of navigation and endurance. Andy finished 45th in a time of 3:05:55.
Bryan Magee and Dom Dorris took part in the 73rd Slieve Donard race, starting from the centre of Newcastle to the mountain summit, some 852 metres higher up. This year saw a revised descent route via the quarry and a new finish in Donard Park. Bryan ran well, finishing 44th with a time of 1:17:46, while Dom finished 153rd with a time of 1:41:20, from a field of over 200 competitors.
Finally, last Thursday evening Andy took part in the fifth round of the Hill and Dale Series, finishing 72nd at Rocky. The four-mile race started at the very scenic location of Leitrim Lodge and included the summits of Altataggart, Pearse’s Castle and Tournamrock before the final climb and the fast descent of Rocky Mountain. Andy’s time was 42:19.
