Caterpillar Larne Half Marathon
Vincent McKenna (Acorns AC) and Laura Graham (Mourne Runners) celebrated victory as a record breaking field of close to 2,100+ athletes took on Caterpillar Larne Half Marathon (Saturday 18th March 2017). The Larne AC hosted event was also part of the Pure Running Half Marathon Series.
Friday’s torrential rain and high winds subsided and conditions for the 27th annual running of the increasingly popular event proved excellent,.
In prefect running conditions the seemingly endless field of runners set off on the 13.1 mile journey which would take them along the famous County Antrim coastline, between Larne and Ballygally. First though, they had to negotiate two miles around the Town Centre – during the middle section of the course, the field also took in hilly inland section in Cairncastle, before returning to the Coast Road.
After negotiating the tough inland loop from Ballygally to Cairncastle, the athletes descended back towards the Coast Road, re-joining at Ballygally and heading towards Larne Leisure Centre via the Coastal Promenade.
Acorns AC Vincent McKenna was first in breaking the tape in 1:09:40 (1st place). Gary Slevin followed in 1:09:56 (2nd Place), before John Black completed the top three in 1:11:01 (3rd place).
It was a similar situation in the ladies race, with Laura Graham impressive effort along the final stretch of the course, before recording 1:15:46 for 1st place. Gladys Ganiel claimed a well-deserved 2nd place in 1:16:05, while Jessica Craig clocked 1:19:24 for 3rd place.
First local man was Gary Montgomery with a fantastic time of 01:16:40 in 23rd position. With East Coast Patricia Blair the first local Female with a time of 1:33:00 in 256th position.
Larne Athletics Club would like to thanks the are local Larne community, the all the runners that took part in the races, there friend and family that came to Larne to support the race and the members of Larne Athletics Club for helping make the event.
Larne AC had a total of Forty-five members running the full distance and joining another record breaking field of close to 2,100 athletes for the clubs flagship event in the racing calendar. With most of the Larne AC membership and family involved in marshaling, water stations and supporting this very successfully event.
