Cairncastle Classic Fell Race

On Saturday 1st June, five Larne Athletic Club runners took part in the inaugural Cairncastle Classic Fell Race organised by East Coast Athletic Club. The 10-mile race included around 2200 feet of climbing and was the fifth round of this year’s NIMRA Championship Series.

Starting on Ballygally Beach, participants ran uphill on Cairncastle Road then onto a farmer’s track before the steep climb to the top of Knock Dhu. Runners then ran along the picturesque Sallagh Braes before retracing their steps to Linford Car Park and beyond to Scawt. The varied descent took in fields, then a rocky tractor path before reaching the Coast Road and a flat run back to the finish line on the beach.

Bryan Magee climbed well up the face and across the top of Knock Dhu, finishing 21st in a time of 1:31:28. Bryan has been competing in the popular Hill and Dale Race Series in the Mourne Mountains on Thursday evenings and also had a particularly good run in the Slieve Donard Race three weeks ago where he finished 32nd in a time of 1:14:10.

Andy Gregg was next, returning to the hills for the first time this season to finish in 26th place and a time of 1:33:59. He was followed by Cahal McAuley in 42nd place with a time of 1:45:24. Sinead-Marie McAllister had a great run, finishing 65th in 2:04:29 while Andrew Davidson, in his first attempt at this distance over this type of terrain, also ran well finishing 72nd in 2:23:02.

Thank You to all at East Coast Athletic Club for organizing a very enjoyable event.
